OVERVIEW

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the easternmost part of Bhutan, is a hidden gem known for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. This remote and least-explored region is home to the semi-nomadic Brokpa community, who have preserved their unique traditions and way of life. The sanctuary boasts extensive tracts of untouched mixed conifer forests and is renowned for having the highest diversity of rhododendron species in Bhutan, adding to its ecological significance.

Mammals

The sanctuary’s pristine wilderness and undisturbed habitats support a diverse seection of mammals. Prominent species include the Clouded Leopard, Red Fox, Red Panda, Himalayan Goral, Himalayan Black Bear, and Bengal Tiger. Additionally, the area is home to various smaller mammals, including rodents and bats.

Birds

The sanctuary is a haven for diverse bird species, including the Satyr Tragopan and Blyth’s Tragopan. Notable avian inhabitants include the Himalayan Griffon, Great Parrotbill, Bar-winged Wren Babbler, Ludlow’s Fulvetta, Himalayan Monal, and Blood Pheasant, among others. These species highlight the sanctuary’s importance as a critical birdwatching destination

Insects

The sanctuary is home to a variety of butterfly species, including the Yellow Orange Tip, Great Orange Tip, Glassy Bluebottle, Common Mormon, Common Peacock, Indian Skipper, Common Yellow Swallowtail, Red Lacewing, and Large Silverstripe, among others. These butterflies contribute to the park’s vibrant and diverse insect life

Plants

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is primarily covered by coniferous forests, with extensive patches of the endemic Rhododendron Bhutanense scattered throughout certain areas. The sanctuary is also home to numerous orchid species, and a remarkable 35 varieties of rhododendrons have been recorded within its boundaries


Tourism

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary offers unique tourism experiences, blending nature, culture, and adventure. Visitors can explore pristine landscapes, observe rare wildlife, and trek through the picturesque villages of Merak and Sakteng. The sanctuary also provides insights into the Brokpa nomadic lifestyle, making it a perfect destination for eco-tourism and cultural exploration.

Human Presence and Management

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the Brokpa community, a semi-nomadic group residing in the villages of Merak and Sakteng. With a population of around 6,000, they sustain themselves by rearing yaks and cattle. The sanctuary is managed with a focus on balancing conservation and sustainable livelihoods, promoting eco-tourism, and preserving the cultural heritage of the Brokpa people while safeguarding the region’s rich biodiversity.
